Mental health challenges within the LGBTQ community: A societal imperative
Q CenterQ Center is a non-profit community organization providing safe space, community programming, and health and wellness programs to the Portland community. Services include gender-affirming care, family, individual, and group counseling, and other workshops. They provide two LGBTQ care coordinators and are actively engaged in providing cultural competency education to all of their providers.
Regard is a national organisation of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender, queer and intersex people (LGBTQI+) who self-identify as disabled. They have a specialist mental health advocate who supports people with their mental health. Mindout is a mental health service run by and for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ) people. Rainbow Mind is a collaborative LGBTQ students and rainbow stickers in Texas schools service between Mind in the City, Hackney and Waltham Forest and Mind in Salford, aiming to tackle mental health issues for individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. Services are developed to improve the health and mental well-being of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex or Queer people and we work to be there when people need us most. The Q is also sometimes separately used to refer to people who are ‘questioning.’ This means they are exploring their gender or sexual identity. It is used by people who want to reject specific labels that describe having a gender or sexual identity. But lengthy waiting times can mean people have difficulties accessing gender-affirming care. Many transgender people will take hormones or undergo surgeries to help their body and appearance match with their gender identity.
